De-Cluttering ~ Remember Less is More

Those are words to live by I’d say. For some of us parting with anything in the home is often difficult and painful. But it doesn’t have to be. Give yourself permission that you don’t have to display absolutely everything that anyone ever gave you, and its ok to part with some things.

When a room is so jammed and cluttered up with things from knick-knacks, pictures, and dead flowers that have long passed their prime, it’s OK to let go. A lot of clutter is very distracting to the eye. Instead of actually showcasing your room and showing everything off to its best potential, you’ve accomplished the exact opposite by a person’s eye simply giving up looking at any one thing in all the chaos and confusion.

When there is organization in a room and a few key elements to enjoy that is what works best. Don’t scatter about the room a bunch of little pictures, instead group them nicely onto the wall, they look more substantial that way and the impact is greater. Live plants or flowers must look fresh and well kept; no one has ever appreciated a dead plant in a lovely container. If you have a collection then put out a few pieces for display. If you have a lot of them then switch them out every few months so you can enjoy them all, but don’t display them all at once.

My rule of thumb is if you have not seen or enjoyed a particular item in your room in more than a year, then its safe to say that you can either part with it or put it in storage. Trust me, you’ll enjoy your room and your heirlooms, pictures and collectables much more when you can “see” them. Don’t be surprised when someone asks “is that a new piece” because they never noticed it before. Remember Less is More!
