Flatware for the Dining Room
Flatware might seem unimportant in the big scheme of planning your Dining Room décor, but nothing could be further from the truth. Flatware for your Dining Room or any eating area for that matter, should be the best quality you can afford to buy.
We can all do some skimping in some areas, but flatware is not one of them. Considering all the daily use they get, from eating with them, serving, washing and drying, good flatware should be a priority.
On the market today there are a variety of materials flatware can be made from such as stainless steel, brass, sterling silver, forged stainless steel and more. For the average household that will use flatware daily and have it in and out of the dishwasher, a good stainless steel or forged stainless steel is probably the way to go. There is no tarnishing or polishing to worry about and depending on the gauge of stainless steel you select they will be durable for many years to come. A medium weight is comfortable to hold and use, a lighter less expensive weight is subject to bending easily or if near heat can cause a burn to the person using it. Selecting too heavy a weight, almost becomes cumbersome to use and really isn't all that enjoyable.
Be sure to pick up and hold the utensils before you purchase them and make sure they feel comfortable to grip, no sharp edges to poke or prod. Some design details might look lovely to look at and be striking set at a place setting, but if they are jabbing you while you eat, then you meal will be less than enjoyable no matter how great a cook you were.
A comfortable service is 6-8 and be sure to pick up the ''completer sets'', which usually include a gravy ladle, a meat fork and 2 vegetable spoons. If you are selecting from a name brand such as Oneida, Mikasa, Waterford or Henkels, they often have ''specialty pieces'', such as cocktail forks and spoons, parfait spoons, pickle forks, sugar tongs and more.
So whether your style at home is casual or formal, keep in mind how often your flatware is used and you want to make sure that each and every meal you have lovingly prepared will be enjoyed by all who sit at your table.
