A Family Room is exactly that, a room designed for where the family gathers to relax, watch television, play games and sometimes read a good book. In days gone by the Family Room was usually the home of ''Dads'' favorite recliner and the hand me down plaid or floral couch for the kids, with Mom fetching munchies.
Thankfully we have arrived in the “new millennium” and this particular room has been redefined for purpose and function and now can be truly enjoyed as a “family” room. In most homes the family room is located adjoining to the kitchen. In an older home the basement space can be rezoned as the family room. Modern families today may want the room to have multi functions, such as a media centre, a reading nook, a place to enjoy music or it can definitely be done up as the party place.
Electronics today create a real buzz of excitement with components changing and becoming more exciting week by week. The television has become a permanent fixture in the family room today. The use of built in cabinetry has become very popular that not only gives a high-end look to your family room, but also enables the “television” to have its place of importance within the space. Along side the television you can display your books, photos and albums, treasured pieces and a floral or plant display.
The fireplace is a wonderful feature to the family room area and can give a real warmth and cozy feeling to the space. Accenting the hearth with wonderful stone or tile materials along with a great mantelpiece, gives not only a real focal point but also a useful purpose to the room as well. A warm cozy fire burning just feels better than switching up the temperature on the furnace.
Furnishings in your family room should be exactly that, “family friendly”. There are so many options and choices today that you can have your furniture feel warm, cozy and elegant and the best part being you can wipe off the stains as needed. If your family room is adjoining to your kitchen then ensure that your style and colour scheme either flows nicely alongside or is complimentary to what you have in mind.
Enjoy your family room; it should be more casual and less fussy. If T.V. is important to your family try not to make it the dominating feature of your room. Have great seating arrangements so your family can have some very real and important conversation, but by the same token make sure your family is also having FUN! From games to music, reading to movie watching it can all fit into your family room space.
Be sure your room has everything you wanted in it. Number one you want to be comfortable, and number two is….you guessed it; you still want to be comfortable. Your family room will serve you well whether your catching a few winks on the couch or playing host to a small gathering, this is the one room in your home that you truly can say is for your Family..and what could be more important.
