Home Office Design

Millions of people today are working from home. Whether you’re a professional businessperson or a stay at home mom, creating a home office space has many benefits. Your office at home doesn’t have to be big in size to work well, but with a little creativity and ingenuity even a small space can provide you with all your office needs.

If you’re lucky enough to have a spare room to designate as your home office then that probably works best for most people. But if that isn’t possible don’t give up, office space can be found in other corners of the home. If you have to create your office space by “sharing” within another room then try to designate a “corner” of that room for your office area. Built-ins are great for blending in with existing décor. If your office space is even smaller, making use of a closet that doesn’t use that space to its full potential is perfect for creating a little office nook. The back walls of the closet can have shelving installed for holding materials and supplies. You can give this area some privacy by dividing the space with a large potted plant, a room screen, or a ready made bookshelf.

An average room size of 10x10 is ideal for a home office. Ensure that you have enough electrical outlets to avoid tangles and power bars. Your office space should be well organized, pleasant and inviting not only to yourself but to potential clients as well. If your budget allows look at investing in ergonomically designed pieces that work well for your specific needs. Select a colour for your room that you enjoy being surrounded by. Everyone works more efficiently and are happier when they like their work environment. Low pile carpeting such, as Berbers or sisals are great for ease of movement with your computer chair or a chair pad can be placed underneath. A hard floor surface can be better yet as long as it’s not a soft material where the chair wheels could be causing damage. Add a breath of fresh air to your office by placing a plant or two or fresh flowers to bring “life” into the space. Personal accessories are nice in small doses. A few family pictures or memento’s perhaps but nothing more. Remember your home office is to function well and in order to have that happen not only your mind must be free of clutter but so must your work area.

Functionality in your home office is key, particularly if your office space is small. You’ll want to be able to move your chair in and out easily when reaching for files or opening drawers. A quick rule of thumb is that most everything that you need to do business with is within arms reach and or easily accessible. If your home office is for primarily business purposes then creating it in a separate room is most desirable. If the entire family were using your computer, then creating your office space with in the “family area” of your home would be best. This will help you monitor the computer use by your children. Its great to be able to have a space in your home where you can sit down and pay the household bills where you don’t have to share the space with dinner dishes, homework, and arts and crafts.

Organize, de-clutter, file but don’t PILE and you’ll find that your home office will become your best friend. It will be a room you can rely on for peace of mind, moments of thought and reflection and a space that will serve you well for many years to come.
