Laundry Room Design

The Laundry Room is not necessarily a woman’s favourite room in the house, but she would really appreciate a well-designed and nicely decorated space for sure. Whenever possible don’t have the laundry room sequestered to the damp dingy basement, rather bring it to the floor of the home that is closest to her daily work area. This may not always be possible, but makes more sense in terms of time and function.

If you have the luxury of a large laundry room then make sure you add as many bells and whistles as you can. Have 3-4 bins to assist you with the sorting of the laundry, it can be a time saver later on. A utility sink is great for any pre-soaking of clothes with stains or washing the family pet. A laundry chute from one floor to the laundry room floor can be useful providing enough room is allowed for you to access the cabinetry easily. Having a tug of war with dirty laundry is not my idea of a fun time!

A countertop that can provide a clean folding area is fantastic. Today the new machines are placed under the countertop and everything is within arms reach. Bars installed for hanging your wash and wears or delicates is a must have. There are bars that can collapse against the wall if you are short on room and cannot permanently install a hanging bar. The ironing board usually finds a home in the laundry room somewhere. There are board and iron hangers for the wall or if you’re able to have a built in ironing board that makes things even easier still. Cupboard space is important and you can never have too much of it. Storing laundry supplies and toxic cleaners in a safe and locked cabinet is best.

Choose an easy maintenance flooring. Your already working hard enough keeping up with the laundry you don’t want to add floor maintenance in there as well. If you find you spend a lot of time in your laundry room and you have the space then install a c.d. player to play some of your favourite tunes while your working. Laundry doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom, spice up your room with colour and a few great accessories and hopefully it will become a cheery place to be.
